Meta-Analysis: Finger Spelling as a Possible Link to English Phonology

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Clinton Suite

Abstract

This meta-analysis explores the research that studied the use of fingerspelling as a potential phonological connection to reading and writing English literacy acquisition for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Empirical studies will be evaluated by the types of research methodologies utilized and whether they demonstrated the causal relationship between fingerspelling and its role in the development of English phonology for the reading and writing process. The challenges and need for more intervention studies with fingerspelling will be identified and discussed in the recommendations for future research section.
