This qualitative case study focuses on the exemplary practices of a grass roots charter school located in an urban city in the mid-Atlantic. Founded 20 years ago for low income students, during the inception of the charter school movement, the school challenges assumptions of corporate models of charter schools: that a punitive, no-excuses curriculum is essential to the academic success of children of color; that African American pedagogical excellence only has value to Black and Brown children; and that proximity to white and affluent students and teachers drives Black and Brown student achievement. We found that strategic leadership, clear mission, likeminded faculty and staff, and exemplary problem solving skills enabled this charter to survive the ever-changing tide of charter reform.
