Self-Administered Assessments: The Utility of iPads as a Platform for Engaging Early Assessment

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This study developed and examined the use of a self-administered, iPad assessment for early learners. The aim was to provide teachers with an assessment tool that could be incorporated into routine kindergarten playtime and for which students would perceive as and engage in like they would play. Results revealed students were able to self-administer the assessment and exhibited high engagement. Teachers found the teacher interface to be intuitive and the assessment feedback to be of value for classroom instruction. This is the first of two studies which had a greater focus on usability and will be followed by phase two of the study which will incorporate additional content as well as support for emergent, bilingual, Spanish-speaking students.
