Self-Selected Concept Mapping in the Undergraduate Chemistry Classroom

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Concept maps are node-link diagrams for representing information. Concept mapping is the process of creating concept maps. Although empirical studies and meta-analyses have shown that concept mapping is an effective learning strategy, little is known about the effectiveness of concept mapping in enhancing conceptual understanding particularly in an authentic learning environment. The overarching goal of the experiment was to examine the instructional effectiveness of concept mapping to learn Chemistry concepts. Data from 102 participants were analyzed. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in learning performance of students who selected to concept map and those who did not concept map. Implications of the findings are discussed.
