Rebirth of Slick: Ciphering in Community Spaces to Remix Educator Praxis

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

This study presents autoethnographic testimonies of four Hip-Hop educators, documenting cultural and systemic struggles faced while introducing art-based, social justice, educational practices to public institutions supporting diverse learners. Exploring the interplay of Hip-Hop culture and Educational Leadership, we highlight how our multiple identities within higher education influenced negotiation and interpretation of institutional policy, and created transformative spaces that changed practice (Jones, Taylor & Coward, 2013). While focusing on Hip-Hop culture, an aesthetic speaks to marginalized populations, our analysis uncovered the value in examining the details within the creative aesthetic, the power in exploring critical social and cultural capital in the Hip-Hop context, and implications of creating innovate spaces, like a cipher, that further discourse around social justice art-based leadership.
