How Do Teachers Design and Students Navigate Digital Civic Learning Infrastructures?

Tue, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan West Room

Abstract

As schools update their technological capacity to implement 1-to-1 protocols and integrate digital media across the curriculum, what are the opportunities and constraints of these new mediated environments for civic teaching and learning? My project draws on two qualitative case studies of civic learning infrastructures in schools to investigate how teachers design and adapt for civic learning goals using available technologies such as discussion boards, collaborative authoring tools, and online news sources. The poster will present an emerging theoretical framework for examining how teachers’ own technological competencies and their knowledge of students’ digital use interact with institutional supports and local cultures to shape how innovative civic learning infrastructures are designed and experienced.
