Reconceptualizing the Black Male Preacher as a Teacher

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse E Room

Abstract

Black male preachers are some of the best teachers, however; Black preachers have not been seriously considered in the recruitment process to increase the number of BMTs. It could be because of the idea of separation of church & state. However, when you investigate the idea of separation of church and state, religion and public schools there are no specific guidelines for not attempting to recruit Black male preachers as teachers. As a non-traditional (Goings, 2016) preservice Black male teacher, I have been influenced to become a teacher and advocate for students as a part of my larger theological perspective to serve children and adults in need. Teacher education programs and school districts need to develop meaningful partnerships with the faith community to recruit more Black male preachers in the recruitment process to become teachers.
