Exposing Preservice Black Male Teachers to the National Board Teacher Certification Process Through an Undergraduate Research Experience

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse E Room

Abstract

In the research literature, it is clear that professional learning, growth and development, upward professional mobility, and low teacher salaries are important issues for Black male teachers, but very little consideration has been given to addressing these issues with pre-service Black male teachers in their teacher education program (Pabon, Anderson, & Kharem, 2011). This presentation will provide insight into how Black male faculty members exposed pre-service Black male teachers to the national board teacher certification process during an undergraduate research experience as a way to circumvent issues impacting their retention in the teaching profession (Parker, 2010).
