Poster #78 - Long-Term Effects of Early Care and Education on Cognitive Development: Public Preschool Programs and Impacts on Academic Achievement

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

The scientific rationale for policy proposals to expand public provision of quality preschool education is broad and deep. The first five years of life are a time of rapid development and especially sensitive to a child’s experiences. This study seeks to describe all the available evidence regarding large scale public program impacts on academic achievement. Our scope is limited to studies of children who participated after 2000. We examine the impacts on achievement of two major types of public preschool programs in the US and of public preschool programs in other middle/high-income countries. This review finds that large-scale public programs can produce substantial gains in achievement, though these are somewhat smaller in the longer term than in the short term.
