This paper proposes a “pedagogy of preparation” highlighting the principles of preparing community college students for college-level coursework. Specifically, we translate the best of developmental education (the philosophy of working with academically underprepared students and specific instructional strategies) and apply it to college-level classrooms. Grounded in three key college readiness domains (motivation, academic-related skills, and social engagement), the data in this single case study include focus groups and individual interviews collected over four years from Florida College System students, academic administrators, faculty, advisors, and support staff (1,034 participants). We present teaching strategies from developmental education that can be incorporated into college-level coursework and ways that faculty can collaborate with other campus personnel to meet student needs.
