Understanding How Teachers Interpret and Use Research in Their Practice

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Mezzanine Level, Confederation 3

Abstract

Despite the assertion by scholars on how use of research could result in higher quality decisions and more effective practices, studies found few evidence of research use by Singaporean practitioners in their pedagogical practice, and suggested that the impact of research on practice is low. This study aims to understand the processes and perception of practitioners involved as research users. It seeks to firstly examine how teachers in Singapore schools interpret research, and secondly, how they use the research in their practice. Findings from this study provide empirical evidence of the way teachers engaged with research and insights on how research ‘impact’ teachers’ practice. Findings will inform stakeholders on ways to foster improvement in use of research for informed practice.
