What Do States Need to Support Low-Performing Schools? Evidence-Based Interventions Top the List

Abstract

State Education Agencies (SEAs) are several years into implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In this new era of responsibility related to low-performing schools, what assistance do SEAs need to support schools? This descriptive study uses 2017 and 2018 survey data from SEA leaders in all 50 states. In both years, the study found that the majority reported needing assistance using evidence-based interventions for improvement. In the same time period, percentages needing assistance identifying schools and creating exit criteria declined. These results attest to the need to assist all SEAs with evidence-based strategies and to continue to monitor declines in SEA staffing.
