Re-Visioning Eisner's Arts and the Creation of Mind: Contemporary Arts Pedagogy and Advocacy

Abstract

Eisner dedicates a chapter in Arts and the Creation of Mind (2002) to investigating different “visions and versions of arts education,” (p. 25) providing pedagogical overviews as well as educational philosophies. In a real sense, the visions and versions also provide the reader with material aimed to help validate and advocate for arts programs. Does Eisner’s work still serve as a practical guide and advocacy partner for educators, or have societal changes forced arts educators into newer modes of thinking? This paper will review Eisner’s eight original visions, investigate Eisner’s personal philosophies of arts education, investigate new contemporary visions of arts education, and finally propose a consolidation of all visions of arts education into three consolidated views.
