Poster #15 - Hearing the Voice of the Teacher: Perspectives of Professional Development

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

School districts spend on average $18,000 a year on professional development per teacher. The present study reports the findings of a year-long study of a professional development program that considered teachers’ voices regarding modalities of professional development. The content of the professional development program included instruction on the use of a computer-adaptive supplemental reading program that provided students digital reading curriculum and assessment.
Through survey research, teachers’ preferences and perspective of professional development were considered. Teachers preferred school-based face-to-face professional development sessions as opposed to purely online instruction. Teachers’ motivation to participate in professional development included remuneration, timing, settings, and modality.
