This survey study explored the relationship between adolescents’ media multitasking and their academic performance. Altogether 752 adolescents from a city in South China completed the questionnaire, and their average academic performance was also reported. The path analysis was performed to test the theoretical framework proposed from the literature. The major findings revealed that: 1) media multitasking has a negative influence on self-esteem and academic performance; 2) the indirect relationship between media multitasking and academic performance was mediated by family functioning and peer influence; 3) the indirect relationship between media multitasking and self-esteem was also mediated by family functioning and peer influence. The implications of this study were also discussed.
