"Should I Stay or Should I Go?" Eight Years After Teaching Certification

Abstract

This longitudinal study highlights trajectories of one cohort (n=21) of pre-service teachers eight years after graduation from teacher preparation program. In this work, we attempt to uncover and examine key issues pertaining to pre-service and early teaching as well as examine participating teachers’ multiyear trajectories after graduation. We highlight the challenges and reasons behind why some teachers left the profession altogether and others stayed. We conclude with a list of themes, which could serve as recommendations for current and perspective teachers, school administrators, and teacher preparation programs.
