Poster #21 - A Walk in Their Kicks: Literacy, Identity, and the Schooling of Young Black Males

Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Abstract:
In this session, we will explore critical areas that impact African American male students' literacy, such as: race, socialization, text selections, and historical implications. We will undergird our analysis of how literacy is developed for African American males with a strong theoretical base. Also, we will participate in inquiry about the sociopolitical nature of literacy and challenge the dominant cultural construct. Finally, we will explore solutions for improving educational environments for African American male students.
