More Than Matching Uniforms: Cultivating a Culture of Teamwork in Response to Title IX Violations

Abstract

Minnesota’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action office launched an investigation in 2016 of members of the University of Minnesota football team. The Gophers were not the only team facing sexual assault charges. Baylor suspended four students, University of Miami suspended two students, and the University of Texas football team suspended two members indefinitely due to charges of sexual assault. The list of investigations is long and seems to be growing.
This study examines the historical context of Title IX, presents data collected from recent or current investigations of sexual assault and provides recommendations to leaders regarding appropriate responses, investigations, and methods that have been employed to cultivate a culture of teamwork to prevent such occurrences in the future.
