Data-Based Individualization (DBI) is a systematic process in which educators (a) implement individualized, evidence-based interventions, (b) collect ongoing progress-monitoring data to determine whether students are responsive to interventions, and (c) make decisions about modifying, continuing, or discontinuing the intervention. The purpose of this paper is to present a mixed research study investigating the effects of DBI on students with challenging behavior and the teachers who serve them. Specifically, we conducted a concurrent-parallel design to examine how a self-monitoring intervention improved students’ positive behaviors and teachers’ perceptions of the intervention and DBI framework. While statistical analyses indicated positive outcomes for students and teachers, qualitative results suggest teachers may not yet be ready to train others in this process.
