This study examined the impact on mathematics learning of an initiative to provide kindergarteners in an urban district with tablets loaded with free, widely available digital mathematics games. The study also documented educators’ perceptions of the tablets. The study used a mixed methods design that included a cluster-randomized control trial, which connected student achievement data to use of tablets, and qualitative analysis of teacher interviews and surveys. Treatment classrooms received tablets with a curated selection of mathematics games designed by the Public Broadcasting Network, while control classrooms received unaltered, commercially available tablets. Results showed that while teachers enjoyed the tablets and reported using them frequently, engagement with the mathematics games did not lead to greater achievement in tested math skills.
