The 21st century paradigm shift of teaching and learning aims to foster student deep learning and problem-solving expertise in complex domains. To achieve this goal, technology-supported authentic problem-solving environment and community of practice are created so that students can engage in collaborative problem-solving activities. However, few studies focus on investigating development trajectory during collaborative problem-solving processes, especially under specific procedures such as jigsaw method. To address this gap, this study adopted a novel approach, called Epistemic network analysis (ENA), to analyze online group conversation in an urban planning domain. This exploratory study modeled epistemic development trajectories of different jigsaw groups and examined the heterogeneity of group structure and sequencing of problem solving stages on student expertise development.
