Prior research has relied heavily on variable-centered approaches to explore the relationship between control-value appraisals and emotions, few attempts have been made utilizing person-oriented approaches. Using latent profile analysis, this study identified two types of student profiles (i.e. high control-high value and low control-high value profiles) based on self-reported control and value appraisals obtained from 52 medical students during the process of solving two clinical reasoning tasks. Moreover, this study found that high control students experienced more positive emotions and less negative emotions in both the difficult and easy cases. These profiles were also associated with self-regulated learning differentially.
