"It's Better That She Sees Me": Digital Visual Literacy Narratives Among Women Immigrants in Chile

Abstract

Narratives drawn from a 2017 study of 60 immigrant women in Chile, show that their digital visual literacy practices were framed by gendered communication, rural and urban distinctions, and native language literacy. This paper challenges digital literacy theories that focus heavily on people’s skills and text-based communicative interactions and demonstrates the importance of combining visuality with multi-literacies and narratives of digital communication, for understanding the adaptations and transnational identities of new immigrants.
