This study sought to understand how faculty receive and interpret institutional expectations of their responsibilities (teaching, research, and service). Findings indicate that faculty were actively involved in a process of meaning-making of the varied and often mixed messages they received at different points in their first years at the institution. Part of this meaning-making process involved making sense of contradictions such as reported being asked to prioritize research work, regardless of their institutional type.
