Poster #36 - Training Dropout in the Hotel and Catering Industry: Individual Reasons or Lack of Training Quality?

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Training drop-out is a major concern in the vocational education of young people. In this paper, we examine the reasons for training drop-out among prospective chefs, a group of trainees with above average drop-out rates. We are specifically interested in whether individual reasons and/or aspects of training quality are responsible for drop-out. Using a longitudinal design, we examine German trainees (N = 599) at different times during their three-year apprenticeship program. The analysis of the data of the first measurement point show significant effects of both individual aspects (e.g. perceived fit) and trainees’ satisfaction with the training program on their tendency to drop out. Implications for the organization of vocational education and training programs are discussed.
