The Long-Term Effects of International Student Teaching Placements on the Lives of Teachers

Abstract

This study examined the long-term effects of international student teaching placements on the lives of teachers. Twenty-eight teachers had participated in international student teaching placements in five cohorts between 2009 and 2013. Study participants reported effects on their career and lives as a result of this experience. Effects included increased: personal confidence; ability to self-reflect and implement change; desire to be selective in pursuing and accepting teaching positions; job opportunity; cultural awareness and ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners; and ability to provide holistic instruction. This paper is significant because it adds to the currently small body of research about the long-term effects of how participating in an international student teaching experience subsequently influenced the lives of teachers.
