Abstract

At a historical moment in which ideologies circulate as truth on social media, it becomes vital to understand how people challenge ideological media through digital compositions like YouTube videos. This study of a YouTube response video common to LGBTQ digital culture contributes to closing a gap of research on YouTube as a learning environment and a gap at the intersection of multimodal and critical media literacies. I analyze the ways in which LGBTQ YouTubers make use of social media modes to enact critical media literacy practices of identifying, interrogating, and disrupting ideological underpinnings of media. An overarching finding is that practices of identifying and interrogating ideology serve as processes of disruption, the aim of the response video form.
