The purpose of this study is to classify the groups according to youths’ usage patterns of smartphone and to explore the educational possibility that use of smartphone. For this purpose, the latent profile analysis was conducted. As a result, three groups were found that the ‘low use group’, ‘communication media group’, and ‘middle use learning group’. Among predictive variables, gender, self-control, individual cultural activities, friendship, and smartphone dependency were significant. Comparing the levels of self-directed learning among the groups, the self-directed learning level of the middle use learning group was significantly higher than the low use group and the communication media group. This study is meaningful because it indicates the positive educational aspects according to the use of smartphone.
