Poster #49 - Nothing New Here: Racism, Cultural Hegemony, and Hope in Native Wisconsin

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This paper reflects on the preliminary stages of a research project that addresses the often dishonored historical and current civil liberties and civil rights at the heart of the experience of Native people in Wisconsin. Using critical race theory in the form of counter storytelling and active listening, we use digital storytelling and 360 video footage as the data to support the cultural strengths and positive identity formations of Chippewa reservation high school students, and enable disproportionately white pre-service teachers from Acme University to better understand the neo-colonialism and cultural hegemony that has impacted Native communities. Through the development of a digital pathway, we aim to support enlightened community engagement and mutually beneficial relationships between the participating communities.
