Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This article reports on a systematic review of 47 empirical research papers on the relationship between textese and literacy skills. Text messaging has become the prevalent communication means for young people, and their increasing use of textese and its impact on their language and literacy skills has raised consistent concerns among parents, educators and the public. The review analyses the juxtaposition between the perspectives of the media and the research literature on textese and literacy. To bridge the gaps in the previous literature reviews in the area, we focus on three methodological trends, and examined how the relationship between textese and literacy has been studied. Major themes of research findings are identified and recommendations are made for future research.
