Race, Place, and Exclusion: The Metropolitan Landscape of Racial Inequity in School Discipline

Abstract

Racial inequity in discipline practices is a major civil rights challenge in U.S. schools. With the help of several robust datasets, this study uses quantitative and spatial methods to explore the relationship between school, district and community demographics, attitudes toward discipline and exclusionary discipline outcomes by race and ethnicity in a southeastern metro. It examines root causes of inequitable discipline and adds a spatial dimension to our understanding of how trends play out in the context of a rapidly changing metropolitan community. Findings will be of interest to a broad set of school stakeholders, including leaders, teachers, researchers and advocates.
