Microaggressions in the Academy: Counternarratives of Faculty of Color in Rural Teacher Education

Abstract

This paper describes the counternarratives of faculty of color (FOC) in one of the most rural and predominantly white institutions (PWIs) in the United States. Using critical race theory (CRT) as the theoretical framework and portraiture as our methodology, we reflect on our experiences as FOC in teacher education. Our contribution to diverse scholarship includes: (1) uniquely documenting rural racism as FOC being othered, silenced, and marginalized; (2) joining race scholars in the fight for justice and freedom in the academy, and (3) refusing to become victims by using our scholarship to resist colonization. We ask similarly situated FOC across America to empower themselves and others by speaking and standing up.
