Researchers have called to replace “identify/eliminate” approaches towards errors with an “error for inquiry” model of teaching practice. I make three contributions to the current literature on error analysis. First, I created a typology of the kinds of error interactions that are likely to occur in a middle school math classroom. Second, I found that teachers are largely unprepared for the moments of uncertainty that accompany many emergent errors. Third, even teachers who created a positive error climate lack tools by which they could systematically integrate the “error inquiry model” into their practice.
