Poster #7 - What Makes a Great School? The Bulgarian Good School Index Integrates Well-Being and Academic Achievements

Sat, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In Bulgarian educational system the division between “good” and “bad” schools is obvious, accepted and deepening. The only publicly recognized indicator, used by parents too, is the result of the national independent external assessment. Thus, academic achievements of its students is the only merit by which school is recognized, teachers are respected and awarded. This is especially unjust for segregated minority schools with primarily Roma or Turkish students whose mother tongue is not Bulgarian or for schools in socially depressed regions.
This survey engages parents and policy makers in debate about the importance of well-being and self-perception of students. It also devises and introduces Index for school assessment –integrating results from the external assessment and students’ own perceptions of wellbeing.
