Problem-Based Learning as Connected Learning: Partnering to Creatively Improve Education

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Dufferin

Abstract

This paper examines the experiences of thirteen college freshmen reflecting on their learning in a Problem Based Learning (PBL) course designed around community engaged partnerships with a local elementary school. Reflections were coded using the six design principles composing the Connected Learning Framework (Ito et.al, 2013), and students reveal a strong synergy between effective PBL course design and learning that is openly networked, interest-powered, motivated by a shared purpose, production-centered, peer-supported, and academically oriented. Thus, this paper argues that faculty in higher education interested in implementing PBL courses should consider weaving in connected learning principles to increase the impact and authenticity of the experience for undergraduates.
