"I Need Support in All Aspects of My Life": Latinx Ph.D. Students' Experiences With Mentoring

Abstract

Latinx scholars remain underrepresented in graduate education with only 7.2% of all doctorate degrees obtained (Kamimura-Jimenez & Gonzalez, 2018), and constituting only 4% of all faculty (Ramirez, 2017). This qualitative study highlights the lived experiences of Latinx Ph.D. students in the Southwest, U.S.A., with mentorship by faculty of color. Museus's (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) model was utilized to investigate how mentorship by faculty of color positively impacts Latinx students’ overall experience by being culturally validating and humanizing their identities and lived experiences in preparation for careers in academia.
