This ethnographic case study investigated how a broadened understanding a sustainability-based pedagogy has transformed teacher practice. The goal was to identify the evolution of teacher understanding of sustainability, from rudimentary to sophisticated. As part of a larger ethnographic case study, this research looked at how a sophisticated understanding of sustainability-based education at the intersection of social justice, transformed teacher practice in an environmentally themed urban charter high school. This study offers educational leaders ways to offer professional development (PD) experiences in professional learning communities (PLCs) that help teachers become more socially aware of the injustices perpetrated primarily upon people of color, the economically disadvantaged, and those living closer to the earth.
