Theorizing Racial Micro-Affirmations as a Response to Racial Microaggressions

Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This study seeks to name and theorize a specific type of response to racial microaggressions, racial affirmations. Racial affirmations are a form of resistance to everyday racism that are small and/or brief interactions (acts or interventions of love) that make People of Color feel acknowledged and valued. We explore the varied forms of racial affirmations that emerge in everyday interactions and emerge in places such as textbooks, children’s books, and school curriculum.
