Citation Metrics and Meta-Analysis: The Rise of Bakhtin in English Education

Sun, April 7, 11:50am to 1:20pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Linden

Abstract

This meta-analysis examines the intensification in Bakhtinian scholarship framing educational research from the 17 years prior to 2000 to those years after. In terms of methodology, I performed a three-fold meta-analysis of Bakhtinian citations in education: first using Scopus; second, employing a selection of nine educational journals; and last, focusing on English Education. Based on this research, I offer the following: an increase in journal publications after 2000 as compared to that prior; an intensification of working with Bakhtin theoretically; an identifiable rhizomic structure among established and emerging scholars, between fields of discipline, and among colleagues; and the clustering of scholarly thinking around certain Bakhtinian notions, such as dialogism, authoritative discourse, heteroglossia, and sociocultural discourse in framing research in English education.
