Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Carelton

Abstract

This repeated measures with intervention mixed methods, action research, case study illustrates a mutually beneficial partnership to aid preparation of pre-service teachers and improve the reading comprehension of p-12 students using Reciprocal Teaching (RT). Quantitative survey data, along with STAR reading data, and qualitative data were collected. Results showed that students exhibited significant growth in reading comprehension skills pre- to post-intervention. In addition, two major effects on the classroom environment: effective classroom management and a sense of classroom community were evidenced along with strategy use that aligned to 21st century skills. The RT intervention strategy positively impacted both teachers’ and teacher candidates’ perceived knowledge about RT implementation processes in the classroom and resulted in an impactful clinical experience.
