Abstract

Nowadays the de-humanization of the other has become everyday news from the immigrant crisis in Europe, to the immigrant crisis in the United States (US). In this paper the authors work with pre-service teachers (PST's) using MfSJ to humanize the other and mathematics itself, while connecting them with peers in Uruguay. As a result the authors observed changes in the US PST's that led them to take some kind of action towards TMfSJ. The authors argue that the humanization of the other PST's in Uruguay was an agent of change that helped the US PST's take that first step towards SJ and the humanization of the 'other'.
