This conceptual paper explores the question, “What does it mean to have an appropriate emphasis on spirituality in secular holistic education?” The holistic education movement has certainly facilitated integrating a spiritual perspective in education. Also, recently there has been a significant increase in contemplative approaches to education. The integration of these approaches in the educational process is a positive development; however, my view is that a significant component of a spiritual perspective in secular holistic education is a focus on transformation of Being. This paper explores a few approaches appropriate for a secular setting for facilitating transformative spiritual growth, including not doing, nourishing our inner lives, and the mystery of Spirit.
