Poster #21 - Inside the "New Black Box" of Formative Assessment: Validating the Model of Responses to Feedback

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to gather validity evidence regarding the construct relevance of the model of the internal mechanisms of feedback processing we developed. This model represents how students respond to external feedback, and was developed based on existing literature on formative feedback and responses to feedback. Concurrent and retrospective think alouds were conducted with six students when they were processing feedback that they had just received on their essays, to examine how they respond to feedback. This data were transcribed, coded, and compared with the processes reflected in the model, to identify the model’s under-representation of or irrelevance to the construct. Findings from this qualitative study are reported in this proposal.
