Coping Strategy of Students to Deal With Online Academic Resources: Plagiarize or Not Plagiarize

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the coping strategy of college students to deal with the online academic resources. Factors related to coping strategy, including gender and discipline, were also examined. 203 students (93 are males and 110 are females) participated in this study to complete the questionnaire which was adapted from Selwyn’s (2008) report. Of them, 47 majored in science and engineering, 93 majored in business, and 62 majored in the humanities or social sciences. Results showed that plagiarism is prevalent in higher education. Besides, gender and discipline had influence on certain type of plagiarism, particularly, when students adopted rewriting approach to address the reference downloaded from Internet.
