Using Learning Analytics to Support Problem-Based Learning Facilitation

Abstract

As PBL has been applied in online contexts, instructors face challenges in dealing with multiple small groups and prioritizing those needing most assistance. By synthesizing and presenting students’ data as visualizations, learning analytics (LA) dashboards might enable instructors to track of students’ activities, assess group progress, and make timely decisions to support collaboration. Previous research has emphasized how to trace and present students’ data to promote LA applications in teaching and learning. However, it has not fully explored how instructors make sense of information and act upon LA. Our study aims to investigate PBL facilitator cognition as they utilize LA to analyze group collaboration. The results of this study should inform the design of LA dashboards to support online PBL.
