Examining the Effects of Informal STEM on the Mathematics Dispositions of Black Students

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

The study aims to elucidate the effects of out-of-school time (OST) STEM activities on the mathematics dispositions of Black students. A sample of Black students (N=3,518) was drawn from the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS09/12). After propensity score matching, a MANOVA analysis was conducted to assess the differential effects of OST STEM on the mathematics dispositions of Black students. A significant main effect was found for OST participation, Wilks’s λ = .96, F(3, 1039) = 10.07. The results indicate an acute positive effect on mathematics identity for Black students that participate in informal STEM activities. Implications to support Black STEM learners are provided based on the study results.
