Curriculum at the Oakland Community School

Abstract

Multiple works have been written about the Oakland Community School (OCS). Some argue that the school exists within the parameters of progressive education. Others leverage a Freirean transformative model of education. This work considers those works and frames the curriculum of the OCS within the contexts of Bill Watkins' Black Curriculum Orientations, Carl Grant, Keffrelyn Brown, and Anthony Brown’s assertations about Black Intellectual Thought in Education, as well as the contemporary conversations of cultural sustaining pedagogies and restorative justice in education. Sources include primary resource material from OCS curriculum guides, digital archival data, oral history interview, and panel proceedings.
