Democratizing Evidence in Evaluating Learning: Assessing Impacts of Academic Support Services on Student Outcomes

Abstract

We propose a theoretical framework using Outcomes-based Assessment (OA) to democratically assess the impacts of academic support services on student outcomes in addition to mixed-methods data points drawn from faculty and student experience. This can create a reciprocal culture of accountability that focuses on values and improves student outcomes by measuring student learning, faculty participation and excellence, institutional processes, and shared governance. Too often assessment measures are focused on how a campus can better achieve results, rather than focusing on how the students can best be served by data-driven evidence. This framework facilitates a holistic, collaborative, and transparent campus climate.
