Abstract

As urban educators confront increasingly narrow definitions of instruction and learning and society face pervasive social and educational inequities, educational researchers must examine how urban schools can be places that reflect our country’s democratic ideals and increase student interest in school. How might schools be places where youth engage in meaningful conversations related to pressing issues they identify? How might we develop a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) pedagogy as part of a school-based curriculum to foster young people’s civic participation? Based on the experience of a year-long YPAR project with 9th graders in an urban public school, this presentation puts forth the the potential of YPAR to engage urban youth in original research around issues tied to their communities.
