In this paper, we examine culturally responsive methodologies to craft a methodology of the political. Recent political events in the world, e.g. the election of Trump in the United States and Brexit in the UK are evidence of political divisions causing emotional schisms and a communicative impasse. Qualitative research can examine the complex reasons and emotional motivations for people’s choices that may indicate worldviews different from one’s own. We offer culturally responsive methodologies reimagined to include a methodology of the political. We use examples from three case studies to outline a methodology of the political that requires researchers to exercise empathy, suspend judgement and find the deeper story to understand life worlds vastly different from their own.
